This year’s Vermilion County tournament was both rescheduled and relocated because of the snow on the first weekend, but both the Oakwood Comets and Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin boys and girls teams fought their way to the championship games at the David S. Palmer Arena.
On Friday, January 18, The 20-5 Comet girls were able to secure their third straight county tournament with a 37-25 win over the 21-6 Blue Devils. Kaetlyn Young scored 16 points in the victory for Oakwood. Emily Meidel also had 16 points for BHRA.
The next night the boys fell short in their pursuit of claiming the county title in both the boys and girls tournaments. A feat that has not been accomplished since the Comets did it in both 1985 and 1986.
The Blue Devils topped the Comets 48-31 in Saturday’s championship game. Blue Devil Junior, Drew Reifstick had 25 points in his second game back from a broken hand. Sophomore Elijah Reifstick had 8 points in the game. Zane Priest and Trevan Garrett led the Comets with 8 points each.
This is BHRA’s boys team’s first County Title since 2016.
The boys teams will have five more games this regular season against Salt Fork, Chrisman, Westville, Georgetown-Ridge Farm and Schlarman. Their next game is February 1 at home against Salt Fork.
The girls team will finish their regular season with a home game against the Schlarman Academy Hilltoppers.
Both varsity games are expected to begin at 7:30 p.m.
