DLO Musical Theatre will present two youth musicals in July: Disney’s Freaky Friday the Musical (teen show), and A Kidsummer Night’s Dream (children’s show). Both will be at the Danville Village Mall performance space in the south wing of the mall, down the hall from the AMC Theatres entrance.

Based on the beloved 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, Freaky Friday features a book by Bridget Carpenter – the co-executive producer and writer on the beloved TV hits, “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood” – and music and lyrics by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey – the Pulitzer Prize-winning composers of Next to Normal.

When an uber-organized mother and her spontaneous teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right. Masquerading as each other, they must work together to solve the mystery of how to break the spell. By spending a day in each other’s shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another in a way they never could have imagined. In the end, both learn the true power of love and the strength of the bond between a mother and daughter in this heartfelt and hilarious adaptation.

DLO’s performance features 30 teen performers and is directed by Bryson Varner, music directed by Jodi Prosser-Muller, with choreography by Samantha Wesner.

“Freaky Friday has always been one of my favorite movies and for it to be made it to a musical was just meant to be,” says Varner. “It has been a dream for many years to be able to direct my own show, and to be given the most amazing cast I could’ve asked for is just a dream come true.”

There will be four performances of Freaky Friday: July 19 at 7:30 p.m., July 20 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and July 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for students.

A Kidsummer Night’s Dream is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream that is full of mischief and mayhem, misunderstandings and magic potion mix ups. In the woods outside Athens, the fairy king and queen are squabbling over a changeling. Enter a pair of runaway lovers intent on eloping, a suitor in pursuit, and a group of workers rehearsing their humble play as a gift for the duke’s wedding. The realms of humans and fairies collide as Puck works his mischief.

DLO’s show features more than 30 area youth performers. It is directed by Tina King Helferich, music directed by Donald Shumard and Brianna Webster, with choreography by Cassidy Helferich and Noah Acree.

“I have always been a fan of Shakespeare, as well as children’s theatre, and this production allows me to bask in the glory of both,” says Helferich. “I get to work with some of the area’s most amazing kids and young adults while watching a wonderful children’s version of one of my favorite plays come to life. This really is a summer full of magic.”

A Kidsummer Night’s Dream will have four performances: July 26 at 7 p.m., July 27 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and July 28 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Tickets for both shows may be purchased online at dlomusicaltheatre.com or at the door. For more information, contact the DLO Box Office at (217) 431-1660.
