Teen Outdoor Club forms in Vermilion County

The Vermilion County Conservation District is hosting an outdoor crew for all high school age students from throughout Vermilion County to enjoy wilderness activities.

Youth ages 14-20 are invited to experience outdoor challenges such as backpacking, kayaking, and shooting sports.  The next event planned is an Archery Orientation, with a competition for both new and experienced archers.  Join the outdoor club at 6 pm on Wednesday, December 13th at Camp Drake near Catlin, IL.

The following activity will be an A.T.V. rider course.  The program is open to all teenagers in the Vermilion County area.

Plans for future events will be decided by the youth in the group.   Experienced outdoor volunteers will guide events, along with interested parent support. The outdoor adventure could include trail hikes, weekend camps, or aquatic splashes.

The fun experiences might be wilderness survival lessons, river canoe treks, or bicycling journeys.  Options are available for field trips, athletic opportunities, and creative challenges.  With additional experience, Venturers could become involved in traveling outside the area on ski trips, rock climbing, or scuba diving adventures.

Exciting conference events are also set up at the regional and national levels.  As a part of a Venturing crew, each youth gains the ability to guide their fellow campers.  The program promotes youth leadership and builds teamwork in entertaining and education activities.

This outdoor club is organized through a partnership between the Vermilion County Conservation District and the Boy Scouts of America.  Known as a Venturing Crew, this program has been the co-educational high school activity for the B.S.A. for over 20 years.

The Vermilion County crew will take advantage of the great parks system in our area with activities at Kennekuk County Park, Forest Glen Preserve, and Lake Vermilion.
