History of the Independent News

The Independent News was first published by the Rev. Hubert Hotchkiss in the fall of 1976. The paper started as a broadsheet, subscription-driven newspaper but soon converted to the tabloid size. Doyne Lenhart purchased the newspaper in 1984 and changed the paper to a free newspaper, delivered through the mail.

The paper went to a third class mailer and continually added to the circulation until it peaked at 17,000. The News-Gazette added The Independent News to their cluster of weekly newspapers in July 2005.
